What should I expect in the first session?

The first session is usually the most challenging for clients and that in it-self can trigger anxiety. Finding the place, being on time, meeting the counsellor, not sure what to expect during the session can cause apprehension for some clients.

For others concerns and worries around sharing intimate details of their lives with the counsellor can be overwhelming. In addition to this, regardless of whether or not you’ve been in counselling before the first session will most likely lead to a certain level of apprehension.

This is all perfectly normal so try not to worry, a session is never started until the client is relaxed and feels safe in their environment.

First Session

Once you feel comfortable and ready to begin the following occurs –

  • Together we go through the counselling contract –This is a mutual agreement negotiated between the counsellor and the client prior to the commencement of counselling. It articulates the responsibilities of the counsellor towards the client, and also the client’s responsibilities in the counselling relationship.
  • Assessment through clinical interview is completed to identify and clarify the presenting problem.
  • Secondary problems are discussed.
  • Severity of the anxiety is measured
  • Anxiety reduction techniques are shown.
  • Education on anxiety is provided.
