What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is our innate alarm system that is activated when we perceive danger or threat. A rush of adrenaline allows the body to make a quick getaway. It is part of the fight or flight response, keeping us alert, focused, preparing us for danger. Ultimately it keeps us alive.

Yes, the fear associated with anxiety is a good thing! On the other hand anxiety can overwhelm us,   catch us off guard, and in severe cases it can be debilitating. Excessive amounts of dread, worry, fear, and nervousness can begin to negatively dictate our lives. Our internal alarm system is faulty. It is in a heightened state of alert even though there is no perceived danger!

So how can we change that? How do we fix the faulty alarm system? At Crest counselling this is done in the following way.

  • Exploring the root cause of the anxiety,
  • Identifying triggers, irrational beliefs, and behaviours
  • Education,
  • Lifestyle change,
  • Goal setting.
  • Breaking bad habits,
  • Relaxation techniques
